The player incarnates a virus called Red Trigger, and tries to corrupt a computer system by solving puzzles and progressing through the levels.
I wanted to make a game that suits me, and it was the occasion to do it, so I decided to make that game alone. Of course, it depends on the game, but especially for small ones, I find it much more interesting when the game focuses on one simple mechanic, while the level design uses it in many different ways, instead of having a lot of different mechanics that are only used a few times. In the case of Red Trigger, the player shoots red blocks to expand or retract them. He also can activate only 3 at a time, so he has to manage his energy wisely. The red blocks can be used to make platforms, but also to block lasers, hold a door open, power different systems and to propel the player. The player learns all of these techniques with the level design, without any tutorials, except the controls.
In the first two weeks, I made all the plans and some concept art. I spent another two weeks to prototype all the mechanics. By week 6, I had a first version of the complete game, very rough, but it was still possible to finish the game. Then, I improved it by iteration for the remaining weeks.
The game was submitted to Steam Greenlight. It entered the Top 100 in only 29 hours, and ranked around #15 in one week. It has since been Greenlighted and released on July 8th 2016. It received very positive feedback (90% positive from 2,000+ reviews on Steam) and got around 250,000 unique downloads.
Red Trigger can be played with a keyboard or a gamepad.
